|I Humbly Thank You|
Dear Fellow Baptists:
I thank my God always for you who have provided me an opportunity to serve.
I assumed this Presidency humbly. Being elected as the sixteenth President in the history of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, adds new meaning to my humble beginnings. From pastoring a fourteen member twice a month church in my hometown of Seneca to this level of opportunity to serve is indeed an honor.
Thank you, moderators, pastors, delegates and members for your vote of confidence. I look forward to working with Reverend D. E. Greene, Jr., and Reverend Isaac Holt, Vice Presidents at Large; Reverend George Windley, Jr., Secretary; Dr. William T. Johnson, Treasurer and other officers in Kingdom building. Many thanks to my predecessor Dr. Benjamin Snoddy for his leadership for the past five years.
I feel led by the Holy Spirit to Matthew 5:16, for the basis of a general theme. While I attempt to lead this august body, I will emphasize unity; “The Convention Letting Its Light Shine Through Unity”. As a Convention and at our best we are a group of baptized Christians who fellowship and associate together to carry out joint interests.
As it has been the custom of this body, when we meet I hope and pray that we will have a high time of fellowship, sharing, teaching, preaching and doing business. If you have not registered, please do so. We are asking for all churches to participate and mark your calendars for Baptist Day 2013, which will be held on July 28, 2013. Additional information will be forthcoming.
Pursuant to Article II, Section I of our Constitution, I am pleased to announce the appointment of the following officers: Dr. Thomas B. Levy, Esquire, Attorney; Dr. Leonard L. Cain, Executive Assistant to the President; Reverend James B. Lewis, Region I, Vice President; Dr. Jamey O. Graham, Region II, Vice President; Dr. Albert James, Region III, Vice President; Dr. T. E. Simmons, Region IV, Vice President; Dr. John McCoy, Region V, Vice President; Dr. Waymon Mumford Region VI, Vice President; Dr. Michael A. Glenn, Assistant Secretary; Reverend Tommy Gibson, Assistant Treasurer; Reverend Earl Stringfellow, Historian; Dr. Joseph Cook, Organist; Dr. William Salley, Chairman, Registration and Finance Committee; Reverend Rondey Bolden, Assistant Chairman, Registration and Finance Committee; Reverend Eddie Moore, Statistician/Special Assistant; Reverend Cecil Bromell, Editor, Baptist Chronicle. Past Presidents Dr. Willie E. Givens, Jr., and Dr. J. O. Rich have agreed to serve as Advisors to the President.
Mrs. Brenda Jones Taylor has done an outstanding job operating our Headquarters Office for over a year. She needs and deserves our assistance. Therefore, after meeting with the Executive Committee and much prayer, I am pleased to announce that until we secure the necessary funds to advertise and hire a full-time Executive Director, our former Executive Secretary, Dr. Hiram Spain, Jr., has agreed to assist Mrs. Taylor at Headquarters on a volunteer basis. To God be the glory for the great things He has done and will continue to do for our Convention.
The Election Commission under the leadership of Dr. Ralph W. Canty, will address the issues raised in Spartanburg.
The tornado in Oklahoma this week has brought devastation to all that was in its path. Many of our National Baptist Convention Churches, families and friends suffered tremendous loss. The tornado may have moved on, but thousands are without power and basic essentials. They need our assistance now.
Please make all checks payable to the Baptist E&M Convention of South Carolina, 1531 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29201. We will divide the contributions between the three National Conventions. Please make a note on your checks for “Disaster Relief Fund.” Let us give our support to these victims as they rebuild from devastation. Let us remember that it is more blessed to give than to receive. You may also pay online. No contribution is too small.
Finally, I ask for your prayers and support for each elected officer, moderator, pastor and member belonging to our beloved Convention as we continue to do the will of God.
With kindest Christian regards, I am
In His Service,
James B. Blassingame
