Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy, President

The Reverend Benjamin D. Snoddy is a native of Spartanburg County where he was born the third child of six children to Mrs. Geneva Snoddy and the late Deacon Cornell Snoddy, Sr.

He was baptized as a new convert at the New Trinity Baptist Church of Wellford, SC at the age of 13. After becoming licensed in the Gospel Ministry in 1965, he later served as interium pastor of his home church for a short period of time. He was ordained in 1967 by the Spartanburg County Baptist Association.

Dr. Snoddy is a graduate of Claflin University of Orangeburg, SC and Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center of Atlanta, GA. He did further study in the doctoral program at McCormick Theological Seminary of Chicago, IL. His training includes Clinical Pastoral Education (four quarters) and one year of Advanced Pastoral Psychotherapy.

Rev. Snoddy has served a pastor of the Bushy Pond Baptist Church of Norway, SC and the Tabernacle Baptist Church of Blackville, SC. He has also served as a Clinical Chaplain for four years at the South Carolina Department of Corrections with assignments in Columbia, SC. Additionally, he has served as President of the South Carolina Baptist Congress of Christian Education and as Chairman of Commissioners for Spartanburg Technical College for seven years. After his tenure, the Board of Commissioners named the college's board room in his honor, namely the "Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy Board Room." A $10,000 scholarship was also endowed in his name at the college.

Rev. Snoddy is a member of the South Carolina State Technical Systems Board of Directors, the Lawyers Conduct Commission of South Carolina, the BB & T Advisory Board of Spartanburg, the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education Board and the Executive Board of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina.

Rev. Snoddy was inducted by his alma mater into the Claflin University's "Hall of Fame" in November of 2003. He received the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Morris College in 1992. He is an Assistant Dean of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, which is an affiliate of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. Dr. Snoddy was elected in May 2005 by the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina to serve as its First Vice President. In November 2005, the Governor of South Carolina awarded him with the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian award given by the State of South Carolina.

Rev. Snoddy is the Senior Pastor of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church of Spartanburg where he has served for the past 30 years. The church's ministry is about "Raising People to God's Standard."

Rev. Snoddy is married to the former Miss Sheila L. Harvin and is the father of two adult daughters, Angela and Stephanie. He is blessed with one granddaughter, Kristen.

Rev. Snoddy is deeply committed to the church because he believes that the church constitutes God's family and is the instrument God has commissioned to transform the world from darkness to a life in Jesus Christ. His effort, to nurture Mount Moriah and to reach out to other churches as moderator of the Association, reflects the passion of this man for the church of God.
