Walter Butler is a native of Saluda, South Carolina. He is the son of the late Abbie Jennings and the late Johnny Butler. He attended the public schools of Saluda county and received his diploma from Riverside High School in 1969. In 1973, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Clafflin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina. In 1985 he received a B.D. Degree from Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina. He has also done further study at the Lutheran Southern Theological Seminary located in Columbia, South Carolina. In May of 2005, he received a Master’s of Divinity degree from Morehouse College – The International Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia. Currently, he is enrolled in the Doctoral program at Hood University, located in North Carolina.
In Rev. Butler’s spiritual walk with God he has pastured the following churches: From 1974 - 1982 Granger Baptist Church, Bowman, South Carolina, and 1997 - present St. Paul Baptist church, Lexington, South Carolina. Rev. Butler has worked at Robert’s High School from 1973 - 1974 in Holly Hill, South Carolina. He also worked at the Orangeburg County Department of Social Services from 1974 - July 1, 2004. Additionally, Rev. Butler has taught at the Morris College School of Religion as an extension teacher in Neeses, South Carolina from 1988 - 1989. He has faithfully taught at the St. George site since 1989. Additionally, he received a honorary Doctorate of Divinity Degree from Morris college, in May of 2001.
When looking at this phenomenal man, we must look at the various organizations that he was and is apart of. He was a former member of the Orangeburg Ministerial Alliance, a Vice-Moderator of the Orangeburg & Calhoun Missionary Baptist Association, a former Moderator of the Orange & Calhoun Missionary Baptist Association, a Vice-Moderator of the Andrew Chapel Missionary Union, a member of the South Carolina Education and Missionary Convention, a member of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, presently serving his second term as treasurer of the Baptist Education & Missionary Convention, and he is presently serving his second tem on the Trustee board at Morris College.
Rev. Butler has traveled a great deal in his free time. In 1993, 1995, and 1997 he has traveled to the African-American Summit which has taken place in Libreville, Gabon; Dakar, Senegal; Harare, and Zimbabwe, South Africa. He was also a participant in the Johannesburg, South African welcome reception that was hosted by the South African Government and the President, Nelson Mandella. In addition to this, Rev. Butler has traveled to Greece in January, 2005 to retrace the footsteps of Paul. While in Greece he visited the following places: Athens, Corinth, Philippi, Thessaloniki, and, and Veria.
Rev. Butler is married to the former Clara M. Bookhardt of Sante South Carolina. They are the proud parents of four daughters Lakeshia, Deneathra, Waretha, and Jonevea Butler. He is also a proud grandfather.
